  • About the Edition

Naturally durable woods have a variety of commercial uses. Natural resistance to decay has been evaluated in field and laboratory tests of wood from many species, but there are few places where commercial wood users can find comparative assessments of natural durability. In this report, previous studies have been used to assign a numerical resistance rating to 1500 wood species. Species are listed alphabetically by scientific name, along with trade name, decay resistance rating, growing region, and source of resistance information. Species are also listed alphabetically by trade name if available, in the appendix.

It have shown that burl wood is a material exhibiting a transverse isotropic behavior and does not present the same natural symmetries as the wood of the trunk (El Bouhtoury-Charrier et al. , El Mouridi et al. a, b, El Alami et al. ). The thuya woods are assumed durable by artisans, but their natural durability against woodCited by: 2.   Without any protective treatment, most bamboo species have an average natural durability of less than 2 years. Stored under cover, untreated bamboo may last years. These variations in bamboo durability strongly depend on the species, the length of the culm, the thickness of the wall, but also, and equally important, the time of harvesting.

Adding a stain can enhance the color and grain of a wood countertop, but you'll pay 5 to 10 percent more than you would for the same species in its natural state. You can get a pricey look for less, however, by choosing an inexpensive, light-colored species (such as beech) and staining it a rich color (like walnut). The Disadvantages of Wood but there are many applications for which wood is unsuitable due to durability issues. In cases where material needs to withstand high weight loads, multiple impacts, extremely high or low temperatures, metals and synthetic materials are often used in place of wood. Even in the case of traditionally all-wood.

WoodSolutions is an industry initiative designed to provide independent, non-proprietary information about timber and wood products to professionals and companies involved in project development and design and construction in the built environment. Wood is a natural choice for outdoor furniture, but durability varies. (DepositPhotos) A garden bench adds the perfect finishing touch to a landscaped yard. As detailed in Tablethe natural durability of wood against decay fungi and insect attacks can be described with respect to four common European wood conforming with EN (EN), a five-class system is used for the natural durability of heartwood to wood-destroying fungi: (1) very durable; (2) durable; (3) moderately durable; (4) slightly durable; and.

When most people hear the word “durability” in relation to wood, they Natural durability of wood book think of its ability to withstand dents and scrapes. However, in this context it specifically refers to a wood’s ability to resist elemental and natural forces of decay. (The former notion of durability equating to physical toughness would be better explored.

Natural Durability Checklist Most of the information on the natural durability of woods exists in widely scattered sources.

There have been a number of attempts to collect natural durability information on timbers of various countries or biomes (e.g., Chudnoff on tropical species). Trade in wood species has grown and importers areFile Size: KB. Although in many ways standardization of naturally durable species might be similar to pressure-treated wood, there are some differences that need to be considered.

One of these differences is the greater degree of variability in durability that can $0(5,&$'(&7,21$&,$7,21File Size: KB.

The biological resistance or natural resistance is very different for different types of wood. Sapwood - that is, the outer portion of the stem - always has low resistance.

The heartwood contains extractives that discourage fungus and reduces the wood's tendency to. Natural durability of wood is determined by the European standard EN for specimens in ground contact and EN for basidiomycetes in the laboratory, but no test exists for above ground conditions.

For above ground conditions, the European prestandard ENV and EN are used to determine the durability of treated wood. The most important factors Cited by:   Abstract.

In Europe, the durability of wood against wood-destroying basidiomycetes is tested according to CEN/TS (Durability of wood and wood-based products—determination of the natural durability of solid wood against wood-destroying fungi, test methods—part 1: basidiomycetes, ).Existing experience with this standard is quite Cited by: 3.

The durability rating of a species is based on the natural ability of the heartwood of that species to resist decay and insect pests (including termites).
